About Fancourt:
Fancourt’s rich history is a tapestry woven with the dreams and dedication of visionary individuals spanning over a century. In 1860, British engineer Henry Fancourt White arrived in the picturesque region near George with his family, settling at the base of the majestic Outeniqua Mountains. Here, he constructed the elegant Blanco House, a stately residence inspired by the Cotswold mansion style, which would eventually become the namesake of the estate.
Henry White’s legacy extended beyond his home, as he played a pivotal role in developing the commercial infrastructure surrounding the iconic Montagu Pass. Tragically, shortly after his passing, Blanco House went under the hammer, only to be acquired by his son, Ernest Montagu White. In homage to his father, he renamed the house “Fancourt” and embarked on extensive renovations. However, a tragic incident of wild mushroom poisoning befell Montagu, leaving the property in a state of disrepair.
In 1960, the estate found new hope when Dr. Roland Anthony Krynauw, a South African brain surgeon, acquired the property and dedicated himself to its restoration. Driven by a passion to revive its former grandeur, he breathed new life into Fancourt. Today, the beautifully restored Manor House stands as a national monument and a testament to Dr. Krynauw’s unwavering commitment.
In 1989, a new chapter began as Fancourt transitioned into a world-class hotel and golfing destination under the guidance of Andre and Helene Pieterse. Their vision transformed Fancourt into a place of luxury, leisure, and sporting excellence.
Today, Fancourt proudly belongs to Dr. Hasso and Sabine Plattner. With their ownership, Fancourt seamlessly marries the charms of its historic family origins and rich heritage with contemporary comfort and convenience. It has evolved into a haven offering award-winning golf courses, fine dining, wellness facilities, and family-friendly amenities. Every guest, from the youngest to the oldest, can be assured of feeling at home in this luxurious, contemporary, and relaxed environment—a true testament to the enduring legacy of Fancourt.
